McLaren test driver Gary Paffett dominated the timesheets on the second day of young driver testing in Jerez today, setting a time of 1m18.718s in the early-afternoon which went unbeaten for the remaining four hours of the test. Paffett was one of 12 drivers to take to the track over the course of the day, and was almost half a second ahead of nearest rival Nico Hülkenberg when the flag fell at 5pm. Although conditions were much warmer at the start of today's action than yesterday, light rain mid-afternoon resulted in a slippery track, with laptimes slowing as a result, but with all drivers keeping their F1 machienary on-track, despite a vast lack of experience. Williams' 2010 race driver Hülkenberg took second place on the timesheets with a 1m19.184s in their 2009 challenger, which was less than a tenths slower than yesterday's fastest time set by Andy Soucek also in the Williams. Red Bull rookie Daniel Ricciardo continued to impress by going third-quickest, followed by Force India's Paul di Resta and BMW Sauber's Esteban Gutierrez. The only red-flag of the day was caused by Toro Rosso's Mirko Bortolotti when he stopped on-track less than half an hour into the session. Bortolotti had accidentally pressed a button deactivating the gearbox, thereby causing the 15-minute stoppage. Testing concludes in Jerez tomorrow with the third day of action, with rain again likely to feature at some point. Unofficial times from Jerez (02/12/2009): | |||
