Tue, 2 February, 2010Cheste: Day 2 test round-up

Ferrari's Felipe Massa stayed at the top of the timesheets on day 2 in Cheste, improving on yesterday's time by almost eighth tenths of a second to clock a 1m11.722s. Six other drivers were on-track today, with Kobayashi getting his BMW Sauber debut at the wheel of the C29.

Ferrari
Driver: Felipe Massa (1st, 1:11.722, 124 laps)
Having completed 102 laps yesterday, Massa went 22 better today, racking up an impressive 124 laps or 496km. He continued with development work on the new car, concentrating mainly on set-up and tyre analysis. Felipe flys back to Brazil tonight with team-mate Fernando Alonso taking over at the wheel of the F10 tomorrow morning.

Felipe Massa: “I'm really happy, because it has been quite a while I've driven so many kilometres at once. For me it's very positive, I feel fine from a physical point of view, but especially the car has a very good start. We're satisfied by the work done up to now: we've been working on the set up and in the afternoon we started to compare the tyres under different conditions. With lots of petrol on board the car behaves differently, but we didn't experience any surprises. As far as the tyres are concerned we need to understand well how they work on other and harder tracks than this here, but especially how they behave with higher temperatures. Where we're standing compared to the others? That's impossible to say, it's really too early!”

BMW Sauber-Ferrari
Driver: Kamui Kobayashi (2nd, 1:12.056, 96 laps)
23-year-old Kobayashi got his BMW Sauber career off to a positive start today, completing 96 trouble-free laps on his way to the second-quickest time. After familiarising himself with the car early on, Kamui moved on to some basic set-up work on varying fuel loads. Pedro de la Rosa gets back on-track tomorrow.

Kamui Kobayashi: “It was definitely a good day. We had no problems with the car and covered a lot of mileage. The car felt good. I enjoyed driving a lot and also working with the team. It was a difficult winter for everyone but they seem to have done a good job; I want to thank them for that. Now it is important to keep working hard for the remaining test opportunities.”

Willy Rampf (Technical Director): “It was another positive day of testing for us. First of all Kamui familiarised himself with the car and the track. We then continued with some basic set-up work and ran the car on different fuel levels. The latter is very important for us in order to be able to compare the results from the track with our results from track simulation. As yesterday, the car was reliable, which enabled us to complete our programme as scheduled.”

McLaren-Mercedes
Driver: Lewis Hamilton (3rd, 1:12.256, 108 laps)
2008 world champion Lewis Hamilton got his first taste of the MP4-25 today, getting his team's testing programme into full swing with 108 laps of running. He continued with the programme begun by Paffett yesterday, namely working on car set-up with varying fuel loads. The team also continued to look at the new narrower front tyre being introduced this season. Tomorrow sees reigning champion Jenson Button take to the wheel.

Renault
Driver: Robert Kubica (4th, 1:12.426, 119 laps)
Car set-up was the main focus for Kubica today, as he continued to familiarise himself to the R30. Overnight changes cured yesterday's understeer problems, and he was able to complete 119 trouble-free laps. However, his day ended a few minutes prematurely when he stopped on the main straight with an unspecified problem, causing the day's only red flag period. Team-mate Vitaly Petrov will get his F1 test debut tomorrow when he drives the R30 for the first time.

Robert Kubica: “After checking the systems on the car yesterday, we spent today trying to understand the car a bit more, especially to see how the balance reacted to some set-up changes. It's quite different to what I have been used to, so it was important to get a good feel for how the car behaves. We did one very long run, which went pretty well, and there have been no problems, which is a good sign for our reliability.”

Alan Permane (Chief Race Engineer): “Another good day. We did a lot of laps: 119 in total, so we're pleased with our reliability. The changes we made overnight have cured some of the understeer and Robert seems much happier and is feeling more comfortable with the car now. The track conditions were reasonably good and the Bridgestone tyres are particularly well suited to the circuit and are easy to test with.”

Mercedes
Driver: Nico Rosberg (5th, 1:12.899, 119 laps)
Nico Rosberg had the W01 to himself today, and completed an impressive 119 laps with the fifth quickest time overall. His day was spent focusing on long runs having spend yesterday working on a baseline set-up, although he is not yet entirely comfortable with his position in the car. Michael Schumacher drives tomorrow.

Nico Rosberg: “I'm very pleased with our first full day of testing and we were really able to get into the programme and achieve some good work today. We successfully completed a race distance on the car's second day of running and I'm quite happy with how the car felt on the longer runs with heavy fuel. It felt like the same car, just a little bit slower, but the balance was good. We've still got some work to do on my position in the car as I dropped down by 1.5cm during the day which explains why the visibility got a little difficult towards the end but that's something we can fix before the next test. Overall it's been a positive start to our pre-season testing and I'm enjoying working with the team and feeling very comfortable here.”

Williams-Cosworth
Driver: Rubens Barrichello (6th, 1:13.377, 102 laps)
Rubens Barrichello stayed on duty for Williams on day 2, racking up 102 laps at the wheel of the FW32. His quickest time was set during a long run at midday, with the Brazilian reporting a marked improvement in the car from yesterday. Nico Hülkenberg takes over the FW32 tomorrow for his first taste of the machine.

Toro Rosso-Ferrari
Driver: Sébastien Buemi (7th, 1:13.823, 107 laps)
Having lost hours of running yesterday to a gearbox problem Buemi managed to clock 107 laps today, while working through a shakedown programme of car systems checks, brake checks and tyre evaluations. Tomorrow sees Jaime Alguersuari take over at the wheel of the STR5, for what will be his first F1 test day.

Sébastien Buemi: “The car felt good today and I'm happy to have completed many more laps compared to yesterday. We still had some minor issues, but we were able to fix these. By the end of the day we have collected a lot of data to analyse, which will help us to get a better understanding of the new car. A comparison with the old car is difficult because of the different fuel loads and tyres that apply this year. All in all, it was a good day and we will see what we can learn tomorrow.”

Testing concludes in Cheste tomorrow, with the third day of running.
