Fri, 30 July, 2010Sutil undecided on blown diffuser

Force India is yet to decide whether or not to continue running its new blown diffuser for the rest of the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend here in Budapest as the team continues to analyse potential overheating relating to the device. Adrian Sutil was the only driver to run the diffuser today, with team-mate Tonio Liuzzi running with the old floor for a back-to-back comparison, but high temperatures could force the team to ditch it until after the summer break.

Speakig to the press, including Manipe F1, after practice, Sutil revealed it had been a smooth start to the weekend with the new diffuser, and that he was already beginning to see the performance advantage. “Yeah, a good start. We tried several runs this morning, building it up slowly, a few laps at the beginning then longer runs at the end,” explained Sutil. “It all looked good, we just have to see what the performance is like. It's at an early stage at the moment, I think we could already see a little benefit here.”

As the blown diffuser works by blowing hot exhaust gasses into the rear diffuser, overheating has been a regular problem with its implementation for other teams. It's believed that the core cause for McLaren's decision to ditch their blown diffuser for the Saturday and Sunday of the British Grand Prix weekend was because of overheating. Sutil admitted that the temperatures at the rear of his car were high after only ten consecutive laps,

“If you think the temperature will be okay for the race then you run it, but I just did ten laps in a row today and they were all quite high already,” he continued. “So we have to think twice because you don't want to retire after 20 laps. We'll have a chat later and decide.”
