Mon, 5 January, 2009Ferrari to use pitstop lights system again in 2009

Ferrari are likely to return to their innovative pitstop lights system in 2009, team manager Luca Baldisserri has revealed. Having used the system throughout 2008, a critical error in the device's set-up meant Felipe Massa was given the green light to leave the pit box while the fuel hose was still attached while leading the Singapore Grand Prix. The error cost him valuable points, before he subsequently lost the championship by just one point.

Speaking to Italian newspaper La Stampa, Baldisserri confirmed that the system will make a comeback in 2009, following changes to its software. “We have analysed the mistakes made in 2008 and we have improved the system,” said Luca. “A computer programme will prevent the car being released when the fuel hose is attached.”

In Singapore, the pitstop system was switched to manuel mode due to the congested pitlane, but a mistake from the chief mechanic meant Massa was released before refuelling had finished. Due to the incident, the team reverted to the traditional lollipop system for the final three races, but the pitstop lights method is regarded as being a faster and safer route, once it is implemented correctly.
