Fri, 3 July, 2009Brawn to bring updates to strengthen title leads

Brawn GP will bring a host of new updates to their championship-leading BGP001 next weekend, as they look to hit back at Red Bull following their rival's crushing 1-2 at Silverstone a fortnight ago. Red Bull brought a major upgrade package to their car for the British Grand Prix, and this time around it's Brawn GP's turn to upstage their title-challengers with the arrival of new bits.

The team had a number of upgrades ready for their car in Silverstone, but as a result of the tyre warm-up issues they suffered, those aerodynamic updates have been delayed until the German Grand Prix next weekend. Barrichello and Button will get the added bonus of more development items that were scheduled to appear at the Nurburgring.

“We have several new aerodynamic parts from Silverstone which were not used in qualifying and the race due to the issues that we faced there,” revealed team principal Ross Brawn, “along with additional improvements scheduled for the Nürburgring, which should position us well going into the weekend.”

Championship leader Jenson Button saw his advantage cut to 23 points at his home race in Silverstone, but believes that the nature of the Nurburgring should suit the car.

“The Nürburgring is a tricky circuit but there are two key characteristics which should be good for our car,” began Button. “It is a relatively slow circuit with a lot of medium-speed corners which are one of the strengths of the BGP 001. The Nürburgring is also one of the heaviest braking circuits on the calendar so you need a car which will be good through the four heavy braking zones.”

Having suffered with low track temperatures in Silverstone, low ambient temperatures could hamper Brawn's efforts in Germany too, with early forecasts suggesting temperatures will not reach above 18°C all weekend. With cloud cover also expected, track temperatures could stay at or below 30°C, likely to hand Red Bull the advantage as the championship enters the second half of the season.
